    duff·er [ dúffər ] (plural duff·ers)

    1. unintelligent person: somebody regarded as a slow learner or not competent at something ( informal dated insult )

    2. something worthless: something worthless or useless ( dated informal )

    3. regional peddler: a peddler of goods, especially cheap or worthless merchandise ( archaic )

    4. In golf: A bad golfer. Duffer is a derogatory term applied to poor players in general. Somewhat synonymous with "hacker" in that they both apply to poor players. But "duffer" is sometimes used to denote weaker players in general, while "hacker" is often applied to a single golfer as an insult. Also Known As: Hacker, weekend hacker ( modern )
