Archaeologists have recently exhumed the bodies of the two women from the Oseberg ship burial and hope to be able to ascertain if they were related, or whether one was a servant sacrificed to accompany the other in death. At one time it was thought the high-ranking woman (and it's never been clear which of the two women was the high-ranker) was the Viking Queen Åsa, grandmother of Harald Fairhair, but I think I recall reading something about the chronology being wrong for that theory (and can't find the reference again!) and the burial is more likely to be that of Alvhild, the first wife of King Gudrød Halvdanson.

Here is the story anyway: Viking queen exhumed to solve mystery

Although it doesn't mention it in this article, back in June it was reported that the principle reason for exhuming the bodies from both the Oseburg and Gokstad ship burials was concern that the remains may have become damaged by condensation in the metal containers they were re-interred in after the excavations.
