When the door opened the slave on the outside stated
"Livia Scipio to see your mistress."
The slave on the inside looked past him and saw the elegant litter which obviously contained the mentioned Livia Scipio.
"Yes, please have your mistress come in right away and I will summon mine."
Livia's slave went back to the litter and told her that she should proceed inside. Once there she was directed to a waiting area. Livia looked at her surroundings. They were impressive. In no time at all she was approached by the mistress of the house. When she saw the fine quality of Livia's clothing and the elegance of her golding earrings she beamed.
"I am Iunia, to what do I owe this honor Livia Scipio?"
Livia smiled politely.
"It is a pleasure to meet you Iunia but I'm afraid that I need to speak to you on an important matter, one that touches me very deeply."
Iunia looked confused but consented and ushered her guest into a more comfortable room where they could sit down. She called for refreshments but Livia declined.
"Iunia, I will get right to the point. I am here to talk about the slave named Nikephoros."
Iunia's face darkened.
"What has that foul girl done now? She's always getting into trouble. If she has offended you in any way I promise that she will be punished!"
Livia looked at her wide eyed.
"That is just it! But it isn't what she has done to me but what you've done to her."
Iunia suddenly became defensive.
"What I have done to her? What lies has she told you? She's always telling lies, always!"
Livia took on a tougher look herself.
"I happened to see Nike today at the market. She had fallen and I treated her scraped ankle and foot and as I did we got to talking and one thing led to another which is why I am here. I want to make certain that she is going to be alright and that she is treated decently."
Iunia frowned.
"I beg your pardon my good woman but Nikephoros is my property and I will do whatever I want with her. It is of no concern to you. What gives you the right to come into my house and insult me with such accusations."
Livia gave her a surprised look.
"Accusations? I have not accused you of anything. I was just inquiring as to her safety but now that you mention it maybe I should see for myself. Where is she? I would like to speak with her."
Iunia stood up.
"This audience is concluded and I must ask you to leave immediately!"
