can't delete an pic i no longer like

i uploaded an image that did not translate well to the format of this web site. when i try to delete it i get a message saying "Sorry, you cannot delete this Avatar while it has references to it...". i would really like to remove this pic. is there any way? should i just abandon the profile and start a new one?
