I had suspected that the Gauls were not as barbaric and uncivilized as the Romans made them out to be.
Entremont is an excellent example of archaeological evidence that show that the Gauls, at least in the southern part of the area, had a fairly large settlement with furnaces for smelting, an oil press, and a fairly complex temple. More information can be found at The Gauls in Province.
Ceffyl Aedui recently posted an interesting link to a book at Maruadiat es Gaul on Religious Acculturation and Assimilation in Belgic Gaul and Aquitania from the Roman Conquest until the end of the Second Century CE which discusses how the Celtic sanctuary design was the basis for Gallo-Roman temple design.
I am interested to see what more digging will unearth at the site in Lyons though. I know that Augustus chose that as his capitol of Gaul because it was regarded as an important place by the Celts in that area, and a place where tribes would meet to discuss trading and whatever else Celts talked about before Caesar conquered them.
Eddie Izzard's impression of Caesar meeting Vercingetorix:
"Ah, yes, Vergingetorix, of course. I recognize you from the Asterix comics."
