From what we know of the insular celtic laws, the rights and status of an individual existed only within his family group (in Ireland, this was the 'tuath'). An individual did not own land, it was held by the kin and could not be alienated from this group.
For the purposes of inheritance and most forms of obligations, sometimes a closer kinship - one counted through a common great grandfather - was used.
