    Mary Beard has a nice blog post debunking 10 commonly held misconceptions about ancient Rome. One of them, as might be expected, concerns Caesar’s last words. She makes the interesting point that if, instead of the usual question mark (Thou too, my child?), you put an exclamation point at the end, you get a very different meaning. “They’ll get you, too, kid,” is her interpretation.

    She also links to a brief note that discusses the idea that Caesar may have been trying to curse Brutus. Apparently, the words “kai su” were fairly common in Greek curses and curse tablets, as both men would have known. “Teknon” may simply have been contemptuous or insulting.
