The venerable Brughaid of Cill Dara did not realize that his hired sword is a woman. Lasair prefers to dress in a man's leine and trews. This is the most practical clothing for travel and,if necessary, fighting. She is taller than most women. Her long stride equals any warrior's. There is a sword on her hip, a sheaf of spears on her back. Her long black hair is tightly tucked away under windings of rich cloth. Her face is a blank mask except for her dark eyes which are rarely raised to meet anyone. When they are, they are defiant, cold and deep as two black crystals. Her voice is low and heavy from lack of use.
When Lorcan the Bruighaid approached her about finding whoever stole his prize bull, the old man was distraught. He wanted so badly to go after the thief himself. His duties as Brughaid keep him chained to Cill Dara. He offered a generous reward if Lasair could do this for him. He would provide for her travels. She would collect an even larger reward if she brought his bull home again.
Lugh's Fair is over now. Most of the traders have gone. A few inquiries among resident merchants fetch interesting answers. Everyone remembers a magnificent brown and white bull that was further distinguished by being among the last sold. Why would such a remarkable bull remain unsold until the last? Because he was being held for the Rian of Niafer.
Lasair is entrusted with Lorcan's gold brughaid's ring as a token to obtain the help of the local brehon in bringing this matter to justice. She keeps the ring in its pouch and leaves Tara without bothering the brehon. She has learned what the man looked like who sold the bull. She knows which road goes to the Niafer stronghold at Inver Colpa. Lorcan's horse is swift and strong. It will be an easy ride.
