    You can read about it in this article from the International Herald Tribune, which comes with a startling satellite photo showing what the smoke plumes from the various fires burning across the country look like from space. (It looks like Athens at present is completely covered by a plume of smoke from fires on the island of Euboea.) Apparently, the ruins at Olympia are safe, at least for the moment, but the lush green valley that surrounds the ruins, and which added so much to the atmosphere of the site, has already been badly burned. Even more troubling is that a number of small rural villages have been destroyed.
