    The late 1890s and early 1900s marked the birth of the motion picture as an entertainment medium. Some of the earliest motion pictures, by Edison's studios, were of the Spanish American War. Others were... more commercial. Ironically many of the earliest films survive while later films did not because under the copyright laws the earliest films had to file paper images of each film with the copyright office. These copies survived after the film itself deteriorated and could much later be used to reproduce the original film (more or less).
