Caeser, excuse me for not responding sooner, as I have been away on a family vacation. I would suggest consulting the history of Nicetas Choniates. There's an English translation, out-of-print but available in good college or University libraries, by Harry Magoulias entitled O City of Byzantium, Annals of Nicetas Choniates. Choniates was born after John's time, but the first 25 pages or so of his history deal with John's reign.
Also, Charles M. Brand, who wrote a well-regarded history of the years 1180-1204, has translated the history of John Kinnamos entitled Deeds of John and Manuel Comnenus (1976). Rather to my surprise, it's still in print -- albeit at a new copy cost of $89 -- but there are a few used copies available for $30-$40 according to its entry at Amazon.com, which you can find by clicking here. Also, of course, you might be able to find a copy in a good university library.
