The morning songs of the birds and the warmth of the sun streaming through the windows bring my sleeping form back to consciousness. Opening my eyes, I come to the realization that I am looking at the room from a different perspective than I expected. Funny, I do not recall falling asleep in my bed.
I begin to search the depths of my memory for any clue to the movements of the past night. Did I sleepwalk? It is not something I have ever been known to do before that I am aware of. Then I vaguely recall having a dream. I only remember that in it, strong arms held me briefly and that I felt very safe. I cannot recall any other details. Perhaps
Talis checked back in on me and had Titian move me to my bed. It is a possibility though an unlikely one.
Shaking my head, I sit up and let these thoughts go for now. It is of little matter really. I have slept well and am feeling better. There is a knock at my door.
"You may enter," I state firmly, assuming it is Talis or one of the other servants.
"Good morning, my Queen," Talis says as she walks in with a smile on her face.
"You certainly seem to be in a good mood this morning. Did you have a nice time with your brother?"
"Oh, yes. Thank you for allowing me the privilege of spending time with him."
"You are most welcome. You work very hard assisting me, and you deserve to have time for yourself now and then. Please, do not ever hesitate to let me know if you want to take a break, and I will be more conscious of making sure, whether you ask or not, that you do take more breaks," I tell her with a wink.
"Thank you again. You have always been more than kind to me. Your breakfast should be here soon," she informs me. "You look rested and happier yourself this morning. It must be a relief knowing that General Agrafiotis has returned."
"Excuse me? He has returned?" I ask, very puzzled.
"Why, yes. He came to your rooms last night. Did you not speak with him?"
"Not that I remember, no. But now it makes sense."
"What makes sense?" Talis asks.
"How I found myself in bed this morning, rather than over there on the couch where I know I fell asleep last night," I say with a light smile.
"Ah, he probably did not wish to wake you, knowing that you have not been well and needed your rest."
"He knows this?"
"I informed him that you have been unwell, but not what you went through. He did not wait to hear it from me. He rushed to your side instead and must have found you asleep. I would leave it to you anyway to explain to him what you have been through."
"Do you know where he is this morning?" I ask.
"I spotted him this morning in conversation with his son in one of the small meeting rooms. They look as though they have spent the entire night getting to know one another."
I smile brightly at the thought of the two men together at long last.
"Then I shall not disturb them. I will be patient. Talis, help me to dress. I wish to look my very best, as is possible, today. Then I will have my meal.
"As you wish, my Queen."
