jpt-swt, 'Most Select of Places' names the temple complex on the West bank. Together with Luxor, it is the backbone of Waset, the reason for its existence. A religious centre, it is also Kemet's main administrative centre. ...

...was sitting in a chair, her eyes filled with anger and fire. This is blasphemy! That something like this can happen at the holy grounds of a templecomplex! There she was, sitting in her own quarters, with three women who had pretended to be priestesses in her temple, two standing in front of her and one behind her, still holding a knife against her throat. Merenchepri looked at the women in front of her, keeping her cool but internaly burning of anger. "I suppose this is not a social visit?"

One of the women, the eldest, smiled, showing a row of rotten teeth. "Now come My Lady, why the sarcasm? Aren't we all sisters in our job to honour the Mother and our Pharaoh?"

"Something tells me that those things haven't got a place in your lives, if you three are capable of doing something like this. Stop telling me nonsense en tell me why you are here and what you think you can accomplish with this."

"Ah yes...You see, My Lady, we aren't too happy with the recent activities around here. The Pharaoh is gone for a month and you and that witch of a Nebet are searching the scribe and have started a hunt for any traitor around here. Enough reasons for us to get to action."

Merenchepri pulled up an eyebrow. "I can tell, yes."

"My Lady, Ramesses is no good. Bad news to the land from Kush to Hatti, and especially Hatti. We'd like to see him fall and while we are busy making that happen, we don't like you messing around."

"To the point, Sakh!" The woman who held the knife raised her voice. "The boss wants this to be done quickly and he doesn't want us to tell too much."

The eldest woman sighed and looked Merenchepri in the eye. "You have power, My Lady. You can start and call off activities as you please. To be short; you will call off the search for the scribe and stop supporting the Pharaoh in any way. Also you will not search for us when we are gone, which will be tomorrow." The woman bended in front of her. "And you will discretely receive our letters we send from the north, and follow the exact orders that we tell you in those."

Merenchepri smiled. "You are insane, woman. None of those demands are reasonable. What makes you think that no one will get suspicious if I do as you say, starting with my husband? I'm not doing it, you cursed woman!"

All held their breath when a knock on the door could be heared. "My Lady, are you asleep? A letter from Master Chahor has came!" Behind the door, Ghada waited respectfull for the answer of her mistress.

The woman grabbed Merenchepri's face and squeezed it. "Now listen, you foolish girl. Things are set in motion which none of you stupid priestesses can stop! If you're wise, you won't stand against us. Do as we say..." The woman let go of her face and they all ran to the gardens. "...Or those who you love shall die."

The door opened and Ghada came in. "My Lady, what are you doing out of bed? I heared voices; were you talking to someone?" Merenchepri said nothing and stared to the gardens. "My Lady?" Merenchepri looked to her loyal servant and smiled. "I was talking to myself, dear. You said you had a letter?"

Merenchepri sat down by the pont and read the letter, enlighted by the moon. As she was finished she looked into the water and smiled. The Netjeru are with you, my dearest husband. I'm so glad you are alive and doing well! She thought of the women and what happened tonight. Then she layed a hand on her belly; she was two and a half months pregnant now and she already loved her child with the undying love of a mother. If anything happened to Chahor or my son, I would never forgive myself...Still, my loyalty lies with Kemet and the Pharaoh. I will not do as they say! I must go and see Mirjam right away!
