With all the cat food recalls this spring, I found myself considering making my own cat food but 1) it isn't practical for someone who is apt to be out of town on weekends and 2) there's a fair amount of work involved to make sure all the nutrients are in there (ie, taurine, with health implications both for feline eyes and hearts). Yes, the cats of yore didn't rely on kitty kibble or the canned stuff, but unless you're on a farm it isn't likely that your cat is going to be getting entire mice or other entire small rodentlike creatures to eat. Or even truly entire fish.
I do supplement the kibble with meats from the kitchen, and I watch to limit dairy and those various glutens from the feline bowl of commercially-made foods.
Dairy may well be the gaseous issue here, indeed.
