Jacques, I have brought you a most precious gift from my own land, which I hope will please you. In China, jade symbolizes wisdom, justice, compassion, modesty and courage, all qualities which I hope will be present in our marriage.

The fish are carp, which represent wealth and prosperity, something which can be quite useful in a marriage. The carp is also honored for its bravery in swimming against the current. Legend has it that a carp will turn into the Celestial Dragon when it makes its final leap over the rapids. The double fish amulet can bring good fortune to a marriage, and insure successful childbirth.

According to the ancient Confucian Book of Rites, "A gentleman must wear a jade pendant... He should not take off his jade pendant without good reason."

And so my dear, I offer this gift to you in the hope that you will string it around you neck and never take it off, lest we be beset with problems.
