Gregorius was elected Pope in 590 a bit against his personal wish, but his term would soon appear to be one of the greatest in the history of early christianity! Surely not at first: the plague asked for so many victims that the new Pope even saw it as a sign of Judgement Day! Gregorius concentrated on caring for the ill and dying. When the epidemic finally saw its end, the world did not. But his pontificate can be defined as the 'point final' of wat rested from the ancient world: he became one of the founders of medieval civilisation, not only because of his writings, but also for his organisational and political competences which allowed him to properly address the problems of his time. His authority and power grew sky-high and the structures he built were strong enough to stand the test of time. Very important realisations were the entry of the more mild rule of Benedictus and his decision to send missionaries to England!
