I applaud the efforts to bring the face of Caesar to life. I am afraid, however, that the last couple of pictures are probably too flattering of him in at least one respect. He was apparently quite bald and used a "comb over" from back to front to vainly hide it as much as he could. Suetonius,Lives of the Caesars, The Divine Julius, 45. I suspect that the statue was likewise more generous than Caesar's real head would suggest, but since it was probably commissioned by persons seeking official favour in the era of the Julio/Claudians, it was likewise flattering. We should try the pictures again with most of the hair on top removed, save just a few strands.
