IMPERIUM NEWS
Issue CLXIX (169)
Headline News
Its the year of Cethegus and Niger
In a closely fought election Numerius Cornelius Cethegus finished ahead of his main rival Ancus Maelius Niger for the position of Senior Consul, with 82,570 votes to 80,416. When interviewed on his victory, Cethegus remarked that it was doubtless the imagination, energy and skill he had displayed whilst Governor of Gallia Cisalpina that had impressed the voters. Losing candidate Gnaeus Romilius Corvus was philosophical about his defeat. Asked the next morning if he had slept well after hearing the bad news, he claimed to have slept like a baby that is to say I woke up every two hours and burst into tears.
Foreign News
Treaty with Greece?
The Senate has
still not decided whom it is to send to Greece to finalise the terms of the Treaty with them an unimpressive performance from the Patres.
Road completion
The road linking Genua and Metellium was completed this month.
Plague over in Massilia
Reports indicate that the last vestiges of the pestilence have disappeared from Massilia with the onset of the cold weather.
Lycia
The mere appearance of Consul Nero and his army sufficed to send the Galatian invaders fleeing for the border. We now wait to see if the Proconsul will pursue them.
Mesopotamia
There is still no news this month as to the Parthian/Seleucid War. Both sides are assumed to be resting and planning their next moves.
King Bituitos reports
King Bituitos of Aquitania has replied to the letter from Caesar Albinus, and reported to the Senate in the same terms. A force of several thousand closely ordered slaves crossed his borders earlier this month, forded the river at Lapurdum and, before he had had a chance to gather his troops to react, had pressed rapidly on and passed his northern frontier into Gaul.
Domestic News
Unrest at the hustings
A large group of Italian voters who had made the long trip to Rome to cast their votes expressed their disappointment that Quintus Volscius failed to be elected as Quaestor in noisy tumult. They were able to gain some solace, however, from the return of Servius Succusanus as Tribune for the second year running, and from the elevation of Caius Bruttius Maldestrus to the Senate following his successful Quaestorship in Sardo-Corsica.
A close race for Pontifex Maximus
Shouts of Recount! Recount! rang out as the results of the election for Chief Priest were announced. By the very slenderest of margins, Decimus Claudius Russus (22,891 votes) finished just ahead of the incumbent, Patricus Curius Hibernicus (22,571 votes). The
gens Curia had to console themselves with the election of Gaius Hibernica to the Aedileship.
Senator goes missing
Concern is being expressed for the welfare of Iulius Horatius Riciminus who has not been heard of for some time. It is feared he may have fallen victim to a violent robber, and that his body is even now lying in some alley just waiting to be discovered.
Censorial Decree
Censor Quintus Caecilius Metellus issued this announcement:
I have of course read and considered the letter from our illustrious Pontifex Maximus and, in the absence of any response from my colleague, I have decided that another round of rewards solely for good religious works is not necessary.
Instead I promulgate the attached Decree:
That each of the following have their Family Reputation raised by 1% or 10 points, whichever is the greater:
- LSR, for persevering to the end in Hispania Citerior, and for showing his willingness to assume fresh responsibilities;
- LICA, for diligent administrative work in his province;
- MAL, for getting his calculations right in Sicilia; and
- CSB, for the attention paid to his military duties.
Prodigia
Strong southerly winds battered Rome this month, heralding a major change of direction in unknown respects.

ASSEMBLY
Radical, Liberal or General (1,2 or 3) need 66%, 33% and 50%+ respectively
to pass.
Lex Sempronia de coherentia legislatione (CSB) Radical Passed (66.41%)
If two or more contradicting proposals, that are offered during the same month, receive enough votes to pass, then only the one with the highest number of supporting votes will become valid. If two leges can be fulfilled simultaneously then they are not considered contradicting.
In case there is a tie regarding the number of supporting votes between such contradicting legislative proposals and it is the highest amount, then none of them will become valid.
