On the battlefield confusion reigned, as it must in any cavalry action. The sudden Roman about face and downhill charge had taken the Galatian cavalry by surprise, so used were they to following the Romans as they withdrew. As a result their superior numbers had little effect at first and they were forced back.

But the Galatian horsemen were the best troops their country raised and they were proud men and doughty. Slowly they fought the Romans to a standstill, only to be struck in the left flank by a second, smaller force. This time the fierce melee appeared likely to end in a Galatian defeat were it not for a mishap on the other side.

All through the short, sharp action Lucius Caesar had been prominent in middle of his men, fighting skilfully. Now though, just as things seemed to be going the Roman way, his men watched in horror as his horse reared up in pain and fell backwards, crushing the Tribune beneath it!

Thus, when the Galatians did withdraw, it was in good order and only for a short distance. Confused by the fall of their leader the Romans made no effort to resume the fray, but gathered up his unconscious body and continued their ride back to Perge.

There was relief all round when the Tribune regained consciousness, but his left leg had clearly been broken and he was feverish.

The battle was a draw. Both sides suffered roughly 50% casualties. LICA Jnr adds 1.25% to his command rating (6.15% becomes 7.4%) and earns 12 Military Action points (LICA can claim 6 on his December Statrep). He will be bedridden until the end of January. There is no effect on morale.
