I suppose all the ramifications of the relationship between Brutus and Caesar will never cease to fascinate us - but I suppose what I've always found so odd (especially about Plutarch's comment) is that the man was doing a biography of Marcus Junius Brutus at the same time - if Caepio WAS Brutus, as in your quote, why on earth didn't he add something helpful like "a/k/a Marcus Junius Brutus, later Caesar's assassin." I always feel that we're missing a critical bit of the evidence here - and particularly because, if Caesar DID yank Julia away from our Brutus and marry her off to a man three times her age, surely Brutus would have been angry. Yet there's no indication that Brutus IS angry with Caesar - au contraire, even though he fought with Pompey, he apparently groveled quite successfully post-Pharsalus and was received back with open arms.
Dimly, I seem to remember that there is another quote confirming that Brutus became Caepio, but darned if I can remember where. Thanks for digging those up so we can compare them!
