LIC Jr Young Caesar speaks to the sexmenstris tribunes, all sitting on their horses overlooking the enemy.

"So, this is the time for battle. I tell you what, let's not waste any time. We have two advantages: physical condition and tactical position. They must be more tired, because they have been pushing hard to pursue us, while we have been settig our own pace. And we are on higher ground.
They have two advantages, but we will turn them to disadvantages. First, they have numbers: there's 1500 of them and 1200 of us. Second, their right flank is protected to a certain point by the lake.
So what we do is this: we make two lines, the first consisting of the VII's 900 horse, and the second of the VIII's 300. We spread the first line to face their own; each fighter will have more room to manoeuvre. When we charge (and we'll take the initiative) and are midway to their position, the VIII will move right from behind the first line and attack their left flank. This will accomplish two objectives: it will prevent them from attacking our own right flank, and will push them against the lake, thus turning an advantage (protection) into a liability (a boundary which will prevent their manoeuvering and their eventual retreat)"

    The VIII's tribune whistles softly.

"It may work. Do you want auspices taken?"

"I doubt we can find an augur, and we must fight whatever the omens. Still, I hope the gods will be with us, and I pledge 1000D to build a temple to Honor and Valour*, in whose name we will fight. If I cannot, my father will build it for me."

Both tribunes make approval sounds. The VII's asks:

    "Do we take prisoners?"

"Yes, up to 10%. They will be taken back to Perga and interrogated, then released. If there is any booty (horses, weapons, jewelry, whatever) I as commanding officer take 20%, while 15% goes to each of you and the remainder is divided by the troops. Now give the signal for Offense: Attack. I ride with the VII. For honor and valour! Go!"
