Would you believe that Napoleon's family name, Bonaparte, was of Germanic origin? Bonaparte is a French corruption of the Italian 'Buonaparte' which in turn is a corruption of the Lombardic 'Bonipert'. 'pert' is the Lombardic form of the common
Germanic suffix 'bert' Since the Lombards spoke a more archaic and purer versrion of the German tongue, the 'b' sound became the harsher 'p' sound. There was actually a pope in the ninth century whose name was Bonipert, obviously of Lombardic origin.
