    Pericles is mostly known for his huge construction program in Athens after the devastation of the Persian Wars. He is responsible for the major works on the Acropolis, including the Parthenon. He also led the political party that was to move against Sparta which started the Peloponnesian Wars. Pericles led the Athenians efficiently in the defense of their polis for the first couple of years. Unfortunately, the plague devastated Athens in the second year of the war and Pericles was among the victims.
