Giton watched his guest with interest--the man was attractive in a foreign way, and seemed to be very bright--but he was obviously quite fond of Sextus; he decided it was best to hide what he truly thought of the roman.
"I've heard of Sextus--who in Pompeii has not?--but I think I might have met him only once in passing. I'm fairly new to town and can't really afford to shop for a slave just yet. I've heard that Sextus is well-known for his affairs with both sexes? Is that true? Does he have a current favorite?"
What Giton hoped to hear, but dared not ask, was whether Philandros had reunited with the slave dealer--he longed to be on good terms once more with his childhood friend, but knew that such would not be possible so long as Sextus was in the picture...if he could just talk to Philandros alone, he might have a chance!
Giton leaned forward a bit to pour more wine for his guest....
