From my readings, I have learned that except in toys, the wheel was never used in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, perhaps because of the mountainous terrain?
Another reason for the lack of the wheel is due to the lack of domesticated animals. Even by the time of the Spanish, the only domesticated animals were turkeys, dogs, and bees in Mexico.
