    Themistocles was responsible for the naval defense of Athens. He fortified the Athenian port of Piraeus. He also came up with the idea of building a strong fleet to oppose the Persians at the Battle of Salamis. After this successful engagement, the Persians retreated and Athens entered in her imperial ascendance which made her mistress of the seas.
