I actually view Wikipedia rather like kudzu - it is slowly but surely crushing out and strangling all the small independent history web sites (I have five myself), as it's always the top of Google. AND as you point out, it's no more trustworthy than any other home-made site, entirely dependent upon the quality of whoever is writing it!
