Isn't it a little persnickety to sneer at the popular press for something like that? I mean, sure, to experts it is like totally *egads, HORRORS, everyone KNOWS Caesar wasn't an emperor!!!*
But, c'mon, what's the harm? I mean, it's not like Augustus invented some big office called "Emperor" that everyone had to hold afterward. "Emperor" is a convenient catch-name. And even so, didn't the early emperors continue with the quaint fiction that the Res Publica was still intact?
Hey, from a layman's point of view, being dictator for life probably makes one an emperor.
Of course, I'm just a guy, so what the heck do I know? I just don't get any especial pleasure or sense of superiority out of nit-picking with a general audience. From my little patch of ground, any popular appearance an ancient culture is a plus.
