Well Safiria I'm not sure what you mean by "(Kamm) proposed that the statue might have been a gift to Caesar by Cleo, but here he gives it as a fact".

He does suggest that the statue might have been a gift. There is, as far as I know, no proof of this, but it is very likely, it is something that a king at that time (or today) might have done, and if the statue was in gold (as I read - but where?) it was more probable that it had been made in Egypt than in Rome. Even the statue of Venus, made by the campanian sculptor Arcesilaus, was not of gold.

As for the statue representing Cleo as Isis or as Isis-Aphrodite, that is also possible (although not given as a fact). Cleo was not only queen, she was pharaoh, and she is portayed in Egyptian temples like Dendera. There is a later relief where she is represented with Caesarion as Isis suckling Horus. So it does make sense, although, as I say, I don't think there is proof.

I also enjoyed Antony Kamm's book very much. Like you, I also regret the absence of foot or end notes, but he does state many of his sources when they are most needed. He is truly knowledgeable and yet easy and pleasant to read. And I like the way he seems to have read the old sources with new eyes.

I've already started browsing his website on the Romans, and I think you'll enjoy it too.

So bring on those notes and issues and let's discuss them, shall we?

By the way, why on earth do we have two different threads to discuss books? Here and here.
