Background colour

I've been trying to change the background colour on my home page. I've even checked out the tutorial to see if I'm doing anything wrong, but I can't figure out why it isn't working.

Also, none of my images are loading properly or are displayed right on my page when I add them, despite them not being too large. What am I doing wrong?
