Introduction
The Kingdom of Bhutan is one of three modern countries that make up the Himalayan region within the continent of Asia. The other two countries are Nepal and Tibet.
Bhutan is also known as Druk-yul and Druk Tsendhen - “Land of the Thunder Dragon.” The Bhutanese prefer to be called the Drukpa people. The capital city is Thimphu and several other cities in the country include: Paro, Punakha, and Bumthong.

Religion
Buddhism is Bhutan. Founded in India, Buddhism spread first to Nepal, Tibet, and then to Bhutan. Scholars mainly agree that Buddhism arrived in the mid-ninth century in Bhutan from Tibetan influences. Tibetan monks were fleeing their country due to unrest and found shelter in Bhutan. The Drukpa Kagyupa, a monastery/school was founded in the twelfth century and became the dominant form of Buddhism in Bhutan.
