As we know, Antony's life hung by a thread. Even after the Ides, it was still possible that Caesar's murderers changed their minds and turned on him; I'm sure Antony's first acts - talking with the murderers, offering an amnesty and a compromise in the Senate (I'm sure it wasn't Cicero's idea) - were a result of his insecurity about his own position and fear for his life.
Later he played according to the circumstances - and to what he thought was best for himself.
