The reason I was persuaded to buy the book was the glowing reviews. Even Bryn Mawr lauded it.What I like most about it is the way that it illustrates the relationship between ancient history and contemporary times. It helps to dispell the myth that ancient history is an esoteric study of dusty old manuscripts with no practical application. I would add that it gave me a new perspective on Alexander's Bactrian campaign years as well. I must confess that I have for years rather glossed over that period as an annoying interruption in the tale; it is not.
