I selected the small brown one with the tooled leather cover and made my way through the threatening implements of destruction to the counter, where a most undestructive looking proprietor smiled at me in welcome.

"And what can I offer you lovely ladies today?" he smiled at us. "You never know when you might be needing the odd bit of protection."

"I am hoping I can protect myself, thank you kindly. Surely your town is not as dangerous as all that?" I waved my had vaguely over his wares. "But I would very much like to have this beautiful blank book," I smiled back at him. Reaching again into my pocket, I offered up a small bit of jade. "Will this be enough?"
