Drakus Domitius Cordatus coughed painfully, and his physician winced at the sound. He knew what ailed the Pontifex, and he also knew only time and rest, along with certain medications, would bring a full restoration of health to the senior statesman, and highest priest of Rome. But Cordatus had refused to retire to his estates for months now. At least he had been convinced to give up his role as Princeps Senatus!

Cordatus worked at a normal pace for him, which was hard and fast. But all could see the price it was taking on him. But the old soldier kept working anyway. There were some things that had to be done.

Motioning to a nearby aide, Cordatus handed him two scrolls. One was a private message, to be sent to Patricus Curius Hibernicus. The other was to be a public announcement, read for all to hear that Drakus Domitius Cordatus, Pontifex Maximus, had appointed Curia, daughter of Patricus Curius Hibernicus as the new Vestal. "Have this announced immediately in the Forum." The aide hurried away to do the bidding of the Pontifex Maximus. The choice had been difficult, and it had been a close thing between young Curia and young Aemilia. But in the end, Curia had convinced Cordatus that she was the next chosen Vestal.

Cordatus bent his head again and continued writing. He had considered appointing a New Chief Vestal, but had decided to leave that to his successor. He just didn't have the time. Instead, he was penning his resignation as Pontifex Maximus for reasons of ill health. He just did not believe he was up to the task of caring for Rome's spiritual health now. This letter to was to be read alound in the Forum. By the time it would be read, Cordatus intended to have his entire household out of Rome on on their way to his southern estates, as his physician was ordering him.

As the day came to a close, Cordatus finished the announcement. He left it upon the desk with instructions for it to be read first thing the following morning in the Forum and Senate. By tonight, he and his family and household would be out of Rome.
