apparently Caesar was going to install Dolabella as joint consul with Antony. The two men apparently hated each other for personal and political reasons, and Antony had challenged Dolabella's election. Another strange decision of Caesar's!

When I read this, something went click. I think we can get a very interesting look at Caesar’s management style which is very removed from the man who continually offered clementia to all of his enemies. It is beginning to look to me like he had a tendency to play off his supporters against each other. I have mentioned elsewhere that one of the things that motivated Cassius and Brutus was the way Caesar manipulated them in the quest for a praetorship. It caused a serious breach in their friendship and was one of the ways that Cassius ultimately convinced Brutus to join the conspiracy.

We’ve talked about how Caesar kept his friends close and his enemies closer. But using your friends against each other, presumably as a means of keeping any of them from gaining too much power, is pretty nasty.
