Saturnalian Gifts 2006
In one of his epigrams (VII, 53), Martial reproaches Umber for sending him an assortment of gifts that took six brawny slaves to carry but was only worth about 30 sesterces: tablets, toothpicks, cup, napkin, sponge, small figs, prunes, beans, olives, and cheap wine. Martial suspects that they are rewraps and suggests that next year Umber send just one small boy carrying five pounds of silver!
If you would like to return a gift for rewrap,
you may select one of these in its place.
Germanians provide this treat,
A gift that's good enough to eat..

An old man's gift though this may be,
It's more than twisted, root-bound tree.
