In the early dawn of time, there existed the Kewawqu´was a race of giants and magicians, and the Medecolin who were sorcerers. There was also Pamola who was an evil Night Spirit, and a host of other witches, cannibals and goblins of all kinds. But Glooscap fught them all and conquered them, and felt very good about himself, so good that he boasted to a woman that there was nothing in the world which he couldn´t conquer.
But the woman just laughed at him and said: "Are you quite sure, Master? I know of someone who is not yet conquered and there is nothing which can overthrow him".
Glooscap got curious of course, and asked for this mighty one´s name. The woman told him:
"His name is Wasis, and I strongly advise you not to have anything to do with him."
Glooscap now saw a young baby sitting at the floor, quietly sucking a piece of maple syrup and crooning a little song for himself. This was Wasis. Glooscap had no experience of how to treat babies, but he smiled indulgently at the child and asked it to come to him. Wasis smiled back but kept on sucking his maple syrup and did not move. Then Glooscap imitated a beautiful birdsong. Wasis still made no movement, just wen on with his own little song. Glooscap was not used to being ignored, so he got into a fit of rage and with harh and threatening words he ordered Wasis to stop what he was doing and come to him. Wasis wouldnt bugde however, but began to howl horribly loud, the sound of it drowned the thunder which the rage of Glooscap made.
Glooscap then summoned all his power and magical cunning, he began reciting all his most dangerous spells and he sang his most dreaful incantations and songs which could wake the dead. He even sang the song which could set the devil fleeing to the nether regions of the underworld. ut nothing would make Wasis do Glooscap´s bidding. He just sat there, smiling and looking a little bored.
In the end, Glooscap could take no more but ran from the hut in despair. Wasis sat calmly looking after him, saying: "Goo, goo!". And that is why, whenever small babies say "goo, goo", the Indians think of Wasis and how he made Glooscap run away.
