Thanks to Louisa Agis for reminding me, elsewhere, of what a wonderful introduction to Vindolanda the BBC has on its becoming-increasingly-wonderful ancient history web. You may read it here.
I particularly like the discussion of how the wall developed, including the limes earlier established soon after Agricola. But there is much to cherish.
Somewhere recently (??here?) someone else was kind enough to note that, finally, the Vindolanda Tablets are online, and provide the link! I can't tell you how often in the past five years I've searched to find such an online resource, so enjoy! You can literally read each tablet, with notes, of those already translated, as well as see pictures. Incredible how they've detected the meaning in bits of scrawled decaying wood.
