There is a great deal of good information there. If you're becoming serious about a subject, it often provides other sources to pursue.
I'm not saying you shouldn't use other sources, because I believe knowledge of a subject is only gained through appropriate study, but I don't think a blanket condemnation does any good.
I've seen many places use Wiki articles (particularly those that come from the Encyclopedia Britannica 1911 edition; and from dig sites who cross reference with Wiki, for example) as suggested starting places. Using it for filler until a more complete piece replaces it is not a bad idea. We natives get a little restless looking at four blank walls all the time, me being one of them.:)
I think the other thing that comes to mind is that AW is full of all sorts of people. Some enjoy discussion. Some do not. Others come here solely to roleplay, and there are those that come here to read and enjoy. A lot of people only chat, and there are probably some who only post when there's an 'event' going on. I should think, with the size of this site, that all can be accommodated, whatever their level or interest. I particularly think that this is what Jot must have had in mind when he created a "community."
Wiki serves a useful purpose if it's presented and used with care and I believe that we should be cautious about condemning any work that inspires our members to continue their studies to higher levels, whatever the subject might be.
