This is a traditional Ojibwa tale.
Coyote was wandering along a lake and caught sight of a flock of ducks, which made him hungry for a good dinner. So he stuffed a sack full with grass and with brisk steps and whistling a happy tune he walked past the ducks.
"Where are you going?" one of them asked.
"I am going to a circle," answered Coyote. "What´s in your sack?" the duck asked.
"Songs which I´m bringing to the circle," answered Coyote.
"Oh, please, sing them for us!" said all the ducks.
"I´m in a great hurry".
"Please, please!"
"I´m getting too late."
"Pleasepleaseplease!"
"Ok then. I´ll sing you a song but I will need your help. Arrange yourselves in three rows, all of you. The fattest in the first row, those who are neither fat nor skinny in the second row, and you who are skinny in the farthest row. Now close your eyes all of you and dance and sing as loud as you can. No one may open your eyes or stop singing because my songs have great power. And if you do, you can turn blind! Are you all ready?" "Yes indeed" said the ducks and got in line and started to dance and sing together with Coyote.
Coyote then went along the rows and hit the duck in their heads and put them in the sack. All the ducks danced and sang so loud that no one heard the thumping or understood what was happening. This could have gone on until there was no duck left, if not a bony little duck happened to open his eyes and saw what went on. "Look out! He is catching us all!" the bony duck shouted.
The rest of the ducks opened their eyes and ran away. Coyote was not too angry, he already had a lot of ducks in his sack. He went home and had plenty of food for a while.
The ducks went home, mourned their dead and thanked The Great Duck that one of them had been wise enough to open his eyes and that the rest of them had been wise enough to heed the warning.
