    Gnaeus Sempronius Brutticus

Gnaeus Sempronius Brutticus arrives the camp of the Suebi with his escort. He asks for the admittance of the chief in urgent matters, on behalf of Scaeva. He enters the tent of Gundioc in the company of Arvenicus Semproninus, the others wait outside.

    Noble chief,
my name is Gnaeus Sempronius Brutticus, tribune prolegato of legio XX (Arvenicus translates the rank as "sub-chief in the army, leader of 5.000 mighty warriors"). Commander Scaeva sent me with two tasks.
First, we would like to march tomorrow to king Baldric's forces and attack them next day. Please bring as much of your forces as you can. The plan is the following: we hold the middle and the right, your warriors crush the enemy in the left and attack the flank of the main body. In the meantime, half of the joined cavalry is sent to the back of their army, to attack them from behind or to capture all fleeing men after battle. The booty will be halved, one part is your share the other is ours, with the exception of prisoners, who will be the property of Rome.
Second, I have brought with me the proposed treaty wording. We hope that you will find it satisfactory. It contains everything you agreed with praetor Tacitus. However, if you think something should be amended, I am authorized to discuss it with you and make the necessary changes.
Once we agree on it, I will send it to Rome, to be accepted by the assembly ("council of the tribes"). After we receive their approval (we expect it for next month) then the commander will be ready to make the oath with you and your chiefs. Please describe me the ritual of blood-oath, in order we do not make any mistakes during the ceremony.

Gnaeus Sempronius Brutticus presents the document to the chief. The treaty wording reads:

"This agreement is made between the Senate and the People of Rome, represented by Postumius Rubeleius Scaeva, Commander of the army in Narbonensis, and the tribes of Suebi, ... (here follows the names of the other tribes that follow Gundioc's rule), represented by chief Gundioc, ... (here follows the names of the other chiefs).
We call forth the gods, Jupiter Optimus Maximus, Deus Fidius and (here the god named by Gundioc) to witness this treaty and ensure its validity.

    1. In recognition of their assistance against the Volcae rebels, the people of the Suebi, ... (again the names of the other tribes) shall be confirmed as friends and allies of Rome.
The chiefs of the tribes, namely Gundioc, ... (again the names of the other chiefs) along with their families are granted Roman citizenship, which will be inherited to their descendants.
The nobles of the tribes, along with their families, as listed in the attachment, are granted latin rights, which will be inherited to their descendants.

    2. The people of Suebi (again, the tribes) settle in the lands around Carcaso and Tolosa, previously owned by the Volcae. They elect their own magistrates, according to their customs and traditions.
These magistrates rule in the name of Rome, as regulated in this agreement, according to the laws of the Republic and according to the traditions of their people. They report to the praetor of Gallia Narbonensis, or any representative of Rome with imperium over Narbonensis.

    3. The Senate and the People of Rome guarantee to protect and defend the lands around Tolosa and Carcaso.
The Senate and People of Rome guarantee to respect the right of the Suebi, ...(all tribes here) to worship their own gods.

    4. The Suebi, ... (all tribes here) shall never lift arms except as directed by the Senate and People of Rome.
They are expected to send 5.000 cavalrymen as auxuliaries if the praetor of Narbonensis or any representative of Rome with the imperium over the province requests it. They are also expected to send reinforcements to those forces to replace casualties, however no more than 3.000 in any given year.
If the magistrates of the the tribes decide so, they are free to send more auxiliaries.

    5. The Suebi, ... (all tribes here) pay 7% tax to Rome. If the tax rate for Rome's allies changes, they will also pay the new amount.

    6. In recognition of their assistance to recapture Carcaso, the following citizens receive latin rights with their families: ...(all the loyals included here)."

    Noble chief,
as you see from this document you can rule your subjects as before, and even the current Volcae population will be left to your mercy. As long as Rome receives the tax from the area and the auxiliaries from you, we are satisfied.
However, if I may advise you, do not strip them from their possessions. Instead, marry the warriors whom you want to reward to their daughters or widows. This way you will have less trouble with the same result.
Finally, let me introduce my client Arvenicus Semproninus ("Arvienik, warrior who have chosen to follow the path of chief Brutticus"). I intend to reward him with latin rights, do you have any objection to include his name in the attachment among your nobles? I will pay the price of one full estate (800D) to be his property ("the chief is very generous, gives me much-much land"), I think he will be as rich as your closest followers with this.
What is your opinion? Is the treaty acceptable to you? I am ready to answer your every questions.
