Am I right, Calpurnia, that only Suetonius discusses the evil omens on the Ides of March itself? Earlier posts raise the intelligent point - do we know just when these omens were taken? Were they to be taken in the Curia or whatever other meeting room, prior to the convocation of the Senate?
In thinking about it, I remind myself that the late Republic met all over the place - the infamous meeting in the Temple of Tellius after the Ides, for example, in which the conspirators were amnestied. Or the various meetings of the Senate throughout the Catiline period. They were all over the place, so the sancrosanct quality must surely have derived from the ceremonies, and not the building itself.
