    Heraklia, I cannot agree with you that Caesar's best legacy to the Republic was actually Octavian. In fact, it would have been a very poor legacy if only for the proscriptions, which Caesar abhorred.

    I would think that Caesar left enough, between legislation and territory, for Rome and the world to remember with admiration. Think of the calendar reform, the writings, the traffic laws, the reforms in central and provincial administration, the more liberal granting of Roman citizenship, think of the major building works in Rome and abroad...

    Mr. Osgood was probably thiking of the strife which followed Caesar's death and of the way it was resolved, but that is just a limited perspective.
