Dear Mamerca and dear Heraklia,
if I get it right, you are telling me that depending on who writes on Caesar and when, the inner man that comes out is different. Too bad nobady tried a serious psych study, even based on the few ancient sources, although I guess that not "adding up", they can't be a very strong base.
I don't know much of psychology, so all I can say is that it's a shame that, as Mamerca very well put it, "this luminous Roman's mind remains shadowed to us".
I just finished reading Meier's biography and I can't say that it was easy reading. I also read Carcopino's biography and liked it much more, specially becaused it really tried to frame Caesar's life in what the Romans life was.
As for historical fiction... I agree that Colleen McCullough's series is great. I'm now passing to Iggulden's series.
As you are in the field, what do you think of Caratini's series? I read that he was a big name in Ancient Rome studies in Europe. Do you think he might have had a better insight on the man?
I'll try to get Geltzer's biography. I find it really interesting to see how different researchers highlight different aspects of this historical figure.
Thanks,
Safiria
