trying to understand Caesar's character is absolutely a can of worms, Safiria, because the original sources say so little about the inner man - absolutely full of details (if we can believe them) and they don't quite add up. The inner understanding of WHY Caesar did what he did, has eluded biographers for about 2,000 years and probably will continue to do so. You can string a whole list of adjectives about him - brilliant, ruthless, charming, consumed with ambition, noble, intellectual, a murderer without remorse, a politican sans pareil - and none of 'em really tell you what CAESAR was like.
Christian Meier's biography tries, but unfortunately, I don't like the biography very much so I can't recommend it! I'm afraid he comes through altogether too - how can I say it, 19th century German Freudian emotional? - for me, although to be fair, it's been years since I read it. I re-read Matthew Geltzer on Caesar many times, but I could only handle Meier once.
