approach the new arrival who was receiving a dressing down from the tavern owner, I had to smile. Dear, dear Shi Mei. I was sure she would save all strays if she could. Yet, for reasons I did not understand, Shi Mei seemed a bit perplexed and unnaturally at a loss for words.
I was growing weary of the raucous men and could see Misha was weary too. Something was on her mind although she made every attempt to be cheerful and gracious. I felt she was disguising a troubled mind behind her smiles and light chatter.
Rising to my feet I said to Misha, "I spied a pleasing spot for a camp as I came into town. As a matter of fact, I left my..mount there, to rest. I go there now for some peace and quite. You are most welcome to join me and save your coin, if you wish."
Misha's eyes widened as her gaze fell on the sword at my side.
"I assure you, little one," I told her, "you will be much safer with me than on your own, alone in town."
