It's late in the evening and nearly closing. It's been a very busy day of organizing and cooking. Lamadius is preparing to lock up the shop for the night when a stranger enters...
Hail and well met, my lady. My name is Umbricius Scaurus and I make the highest quality garum in all of Pompeii. If you are interested I can let you try a sample before purchasing. I promise you won't be disappointed.
Umbricus carefully removes the lid from a small clay jar and pours several drops into a cup. He bows as he hands the cup to Lamadius.
My dear sir! I certainly don't need to taste this sauce to determine it's quality, the air speaks plainly enough, please do recap that jar before the cats hear about it also.
After a little bartering (the garum was very expensive) Lamadius had half a dozen small jars of pungent fish sauce on her shelf and Umbricius had a belly full of wine. Umbricius was so full of wine he even felt comfortable enough to ask Lamadius about her strange name. And just like every other time she has been questioned on this matter she quickly changed the subject. They both were seated at a table over wine, figs, and candles and were heard laughing boisterously late into the night.
