Red Moon and Black Mountain, The Grey Mane of Morning, When Voiha Wakes by Joy Chant.....rich and amazing.....(still need to find the third book!)
Red Moon and Black Mountain: "The Starlit Land of Kendrinh fell to Fendarl, the banished Lord of Black Mountain. He was the evil Enchanter of Star Magic. Nowhere in the stricken land was there a champion who could stand against him, who could fend off the black sorcery that became a horrifying reality with each rising of the Red Moon. But unbeknownst to Fendarl, a child was being raised by the Hurnei. A child who would grow to become their greatest warrior. A child who would become a man and learn the paradox of conquest and victory--and the dangers of a prophecy preordained to triumph!" ~ http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk
an excerpt ~
He tried to think of Fendarl, his evil and his strength; and of his own victory. But he could remember only the death wail of a man in great terror, a man whom he had killed; and killed, in the end, not out of justice or necessity, but in the rage and hatred of his heart. The ache of loss became a pain and tears burned his eyes. Yet in his shame and grief there was a seed of anger, for it seemed to him that in some way he could not understand he had been cheated. He had been ready to make an offering of his fear, and maybe even of his life; but something had been taken which he had not offered, something which could not be regained and would be missed for ever. He felt an oppression, as if part of his life had ended.
So he went at last to his rest, wherein lay the only healing for him. But the thing which he had lost he never did regain, though what it was he could never have said. Perhaps it was his youth. For Li'vanh was one who had looked upon the darkness in his own heart, and he must henceforth live his life in the knowledge of that darkness, and in the fear of himself.
