Hmmm, what do you give a couple like Pullo and Eirene? AquaFennica? Nah, Tobius thought of it. Flowers? Laurel and others have filled the place to overflowing. Chocolate? Nope, not technically invented yet (AND I don't want Eirene to lose that svelte figure). A large silver-plated cornocupia? NOT.
It seems to me when Pullo is on campaign with Vorenus, Eirene needs someone almost as dependable as he is - well, relatively - to take care of her. In Celtia, Pullo would have seen the giant running hunting dogs the Romans called Molossian (we call 'em mastiffs). So I merely flew over to Cenabum, nosed around, and brought you both a Molossian puppy called "Shadow" (that's in Celtic - heaven knows what you'd prefer in Latin). Be prepared - they grow to the size of a small pony!

Vergil once wrote of these dogs, "Never, with them on guard," says Virgil, "need you fear for your stalls a midnight thief, or onslaught of wolves, or Iberian brigands at your back."
